The people of Southern Kaduna came out en masse today December 19, 2016 to protest the incessant killings that have been going on unabated in that region. They came out to show the government and the world how bitter they are and how they have been neglected by both the State and Federal Governments.
They are worried because the government has refused to listen to their cry by sending joint security operatives to their aid just like they did in curbing cattle rustling in both Birnin Gwari and Zamfara State.
Recently, Governor El-Rufai has made inflammatory utterances and the most recent one is the one the governor made in one of the interviews he granted newsmen according to www.vanguardngr.com. The governor was reported to have said “that the government has traced some violent and aggrieved Fulani to their countries and paid them to stop the killings of Southern Kaduna natives and the destruction of their communities saying that the renewed violence is carried out by bandits”.
The governor’s statement of paying the herdsmen to stop the killings has angered the youth and yet he couldn’t send security operatives into the bushes where the herdsmen usually hide before and after their attacks. The youth also accuse the governor of indirectly funding the Fulani herdsmen’s attacks on the Southern Kaduna people.
The protest almost turned to violent when the youth protesting marched to the Emir palace and there, the Muslim youth started throwing stones at them around the Emir’s palace. The protest would have turned bloody if not for the quick intervention of the security operatives.
Reports reaching swansylinks.com say that some shops and a church were vandalised by hoodlums. The Kaduna State government has immediately declared a 24-hour curfew to halt the already deteriorating situation.
