YET AGAIN I PONDERED ON
“A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls”.
– Proverbs 25:28 (ESV)
“I am indeed a king, because I know how to rule myself”
– Pietro Aretino (1492 – 1556)
These things are revealed to one, who search deeper for understanding and knowledge. These things are ones, which make men great and powerful. These things are things, within our grasps and purview. Look into the best of these things and be free from ignorance – ignorance of your immediate environment, circumstances and even self.
Amongst these things are meditation, enterprise, education, invention and industry etc. But, frankly I tell you today, there is no such thing more powerful and divine as Self-control. It has been said of self-control; it is a key unto the real life here and the hereafter.
One day, while I walked through the busy Wuse Market, in Abuja. I looked searchingly at people’s faces as they went about their businesses. Wanting to spot that someone who has attained self-control, but I saw none – maybe because I hadn’t attained the glorious height of self-control myself à and hence I am blinded by my prejudices fears, envies, doubts, anxiety, lust and all those natural tendencies.
Are you not aware, that to understand, control, and direct the inner forces of passion, desires, will, greed and intellect is to be in possession of the destinies of men and nations? This my friend is the art and science of self-control. It is therefore, a most desirable virtue.
After much prodding, I discovered that it is the height of wisdom, to be able to see oneself as others see one – self-discovery as a path to self-control. But again, to see oneself as one truly is, is mastery – self-control. Because then, one can murder greed; and share, destroy lust; and keep chaste, kill envy; and embrace. But above all, steer ones destiny aright.
Finally, show me that man who has mastered self and is in control of self and I ll show you a prudent man, whose ways and dealings are prudent, he is a great man. Therefore, Introspect self, analyse self, adjust self, become righteous, and attain pure knowledge. After all these, then wisdom is yours – rule your world and those of men (great and little).
