The purpose of existence of every democracy is to create avenue for freedom.
Democracy guarantees freedom to all law abiding citizens to air their grievances through peaceful means.
Democracy also empowers the citizens to speak out whenever their rights are trampled upon by those in power.
We, at the John Pofi Movement are saddened by the recent happenings in Plateau State, and as if to add salt to an injury, the attitude of Governor Simon Lalong towards a group of protesters under the auspices of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN, Jos North Local Government branch has further confirmed our earlier warning that Lalong does not have the courage to take Plateau State to the next level.
The Protesters who were peaceful, carrying only leaves in their hands and led by a clergy man Nenmaan Gowon were denied access into the government house.
Despite series of explanations and pleading, security men at the gate refused to allow them to enter.
After all attempts have failed and when it became clear that the governor had zoomed off through the back gate, some of the protesters jumped through the fence into the government house, a situation that provoked security men to start firing gun shots into the air.
While we neither condone nor encourage any unruly behavior as alleged by the State government, we do not fathom any reason why a democratically elected governor will “run away” and leave his people without giving them the chance to air their grievances.
This act is undemocratic, uncivil, unacceptable, and must be condemned by all lovers of true democracy.
We once again commiserate with the people who were affected in the recent incident in the state and pray God to bring lasting solution to the problem at hand.
Long live Plateau State
Long live Nigeria
Amb. John Pofi
