How Kogi State Government funneled Hundreds of Millions for Ondo state election
We are appalled by the stupendous amount of money that was spent on the Ondo state gubernatorial elections, an election a lot of people consider to be the most expensive gubernatorial election in Nigeria’s political history.
Findings shows that Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state deployed over five hundred million naira to prosecute the said election as part of the mandate given to him by his party. This money, he reportedly shared to the some of his party chieftains in Ondo state, to mobilize electorate for the APC candidate, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu. The money was coordinated in the name of Bello Mobilization Kogi state indigenes that are resident in Ondo state for AKETI, and shared through campaign coordinators and various support groups for distribution to electorates before and during the election.
At this critical point of financial crunch in Kogi state, some boys within the corridors of power and other special friends of Bello purportedly got scandalous amount to prosecute the campaign in Ondo state. Thugs were not left out of this spending spree, as some of them were reportedly bribed and armed to canvass for votes for the APC candidate.
Governor Bello practically abandoned his job as Kogi state governor, he was seen all over the nooks and cranny of Ondo state, campaigning and mobilizing for Chief Akeredolu of APC, as well as wasting the scarce resources of Kogi people just to satisfy the taste of his party. Findings shows that Bello was trying to enter into the good books of the party leadership ahead of 2019 election of Kogi state, which he is already working towards despite his failure to govern Kogi state as expected.
Bello wasn’t only seen on the street mobilizing for the APC candidate, he sent some young men into the field on the very day of the election, this could be seen in the pictures posted by a certain Mr. Nda Aaron, a member of Bello’s media volunteer team. The pictures posted by Mr. Aaron showed how hundreds of young men were deployed from Kogi East and Central Senatorial districts into Ondo state. This multi million Naira expenses was funded by Kogi state government. It is shocking to know that the state government owes civil servants over seven months salaries, despite collecting 20 billion naira as bailout funds, and still receiving one of the highest allocation in the North central.
A very reliable source within the ruling APC confirmed that over four billion was spent to prosecute the Ondo state election, an election that they considered to be a win at all cost for the Northern APC bloc. They considered it strategic to humble their national leader Tinubu, whose stance is seen as as an aberration by the group.
This is the most prodigal, wasteful, senseless, and highly insensitive administration in the history of our dear state.
Since coming to power, Yahaya Bello has disregarded common sense, deliberately owed workers, and inflicting untold hardship on Kogi indigenes and residence.
