The Southern Kaduna People Union (SOKAPU), Youth Wing, under the leadership of Comrade Nasiru Jagaba organized a Conference/Dinner and Award ceremony with the theme: REVISITING THE POLITICAL PARTICIPATION OF SOUTHERN KADUNA-THE ROLE OF THE YOUTHS. The programme started at exactly 12:30pm on 29th December, 2017 with opening prayer said by Rev. Emmanuel Bako.
Distinguished sons and daughters of Southern Kaduna were present. Chief amongst those in attendance were Hon. Justice H.S Makeri (rtd) the first President, Kaduna State Customary Court of Appeal, who was well represented by Barr. Mark Jacob as Chairman for the Occasion, Bishop Joseph Danlami Bagobiri, Bishop of Kafanchan Diocese as Guest Speaker, and Barr. Solomon K. Musa, SOKAPU President as Chief Host.
The awards recipients were: Bishop Joseph Danlami Bagobiri, Engr. Ciroma Joseph, Dr. Ephraim Goje, Pastor Chris Delvan Gwamna, Chief Bulus Truang Danmagaji, Gaiya Fidelis, Reuben James Usman, Samuel Atung Esq., James Atung Kanyip, Engr. Andrew Yakubu (former GMD NNPC), and Ramalan Yero, former Governor Kaduna State, amongst others.
The composition of attendees was encouraging as people came from different states, and professionals from various sphere of life graced the occasion with their presence.
The SOKAPU President in his address said, “We’ve gotten to the point where we need to change our calculations and focus. SOKAPU don’t belong to any political party but it is not apolitical”. He added by saying, “The youths have the energy to sensitize and mobilized people for political participation, especially in voting and registration of voters’ card.”
The chairman of the occasion said, “There is confidence in the youth, Southern Kaduna is so proud to have vibrant and highly educated youth. The youth should stand to their responsibilities not to allow themselves to be cowed into submission”. He further said that, “We look forward to seeing a more vibrant and highly educated and intelligent youths who can beat the likes of Prof Nok’s records in Southern Kaduna”. He encouraged the youths to refuse to be addressed as the leaders of tomorrow, emphasising that that tomorrow and the future, is now.
The keynote speaker spoke extensively on the topic for the Conference/Award Ceremony- “Revisiting The Political Participation Of SouthernKaduna: The Role Of The Youths”. One of the points raised which is paramount to Southern Kaduna people, is the age long existent issue of delineation of polling units and wards.
Dr. Gandu gave a comprehensive statistical data on how the zone is delineated in the sharing of polling units and wards. He further called the attention of the audience to observe that “Southern Kaduna should be in the middle belt, not Northwest with respect to Nigerian’s geographical map, and the attributes found within regions”.
The panel of discussants were not left out as each of them did justice to the topic under review. The members of the panel were: Dr. Z. K. Bonat, Barr. Hauwa Shekarau, and Dr. Philip Hayap. The Master of Ceremony (MC) was Jotham Ayuba.
