Premium Times reported that several people were feared dead after a military plane mistakenly dropped a bomb inside the Rann IDP camp in Borno State.
The camp housed thousands of Internally Displaced Persons by the Boko Haram terrorists. Premium Times reported that a source from the camp said hundreds of people were injured and needed to be evacuated to hospitals.
The IDPs camp is located in Kala-balge Local Government Area of Borno. At least two people were killed according to the report swansylinks culled from Premium Times and the injured include an official of the Doctors without borders, MSF.
The military regrets its action. Speaking through its spokesperson, Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar, confirmed the incident and describes it as a mistake.
He also said that they got an Intel that Boko Haram members are moving and the military quickly organise ground troops and airstrike to attack the terrorists.
He further said that it was the airstrike that mistakenly dropped the bomb. We also culled from Premium Times that the state government has already ordered all hospitals in Maiduguri to prepare to receive and promptly act.
An international Red Cross (ICRC), helicopter has been deployed to the camp to evacuate the injured to the different hospitals in Borno.
Major General Lucky Irabor who is the Theatre Commander of Nigerian Forces in Borno also confirmed the story to be true at a press statement.
He said “This morning today, we received reports about gathering of Boko Haram terrorists somewhere in Kala Balge Local Government area of Borno State. We got a coordinate and I directed that the air should go to address the problem. Unfortunately the strike was conducted but it turned out that the locals somewhere in Rann were affected”.
He also said “We are yet to get the details of the casualties. But we have some civilians that have been killed, others are wounded. Among some that are wounded are local staffs of the Medicine Sans Frontiers as well as ICRC”.
