Ashiru visit victims of Kajuru/Nasarawa violence in Kaduna hospital
. . . says his running mate not son of retired Gen. Lekwot
KADUNA – Kaduna state gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Isa Ashiru and his running mate, Hon. Sunday Marshall Katung yesterday visited victims of the violence that engulf parts of Kajuru Local Government Area and Nasarawa, a suburb of Kaduna metropolise.
The Ashiru who condemned the violence as barbaric and unacceptable, blamed poor governance and divisive utterances of the political leadership in the state as largely responsible for reigniting fresh waves of violence in Kajuru.
This was even as the PDP gubernatorial hopeful spoke on the rumour that his running mate, Hon. Sunday Marshal Katung is the son of Gen. Zamani Lekwot (rtd), former governor of old River State.
Ashiru, arrived St. Gerard Hospital, Kakuri around 12:15pm yesterday, along with his running mate, Katung among others. They were ushered into the ward where some of the victims of the violence, were recuperating.
Six of the victims came from Nasarawa ward, a sprawling suburb of Kaduna South LGA.
One of the wounded, Mohammed Lawal Sabo, from Sabo Gari part of Nasarawa still had a bullet in his head. His injuries according to accounts, was as a result of a clash between supporters of the All Progressive Change (APC) and those PDP from the aftermath of last Saturday’s Presidential polls.
Some of the injured from Kajuru LGA could not be reached in the hospital, because of their conditions. In Kajuru, their has been hostilities between the Adara natives and Fulani herdsmen since mid last month, each blaming the other side for initiating the fight.
Mr. Sarki Zana, a blind man in his eighties from Karamai in Maro Ward, Kajuru, LGA was who escaped with severe burns allover his body was happy when told that his visitors were led by Ashiru.
“I am very grateful that you have come to see me,” he said.
“I have heard much about you over the radio. Everyone is saying that you are good man and that when you become governor, you will take good care of all of us. I am praying that God bless you and grant you your request” he said.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of St. Gerard Hospital, Mr. Sunday Ali spoke to Ashiru on the situation at hand.
“I am glad to inform you that they are all doing well. We have one that has had to go through a difficult plastic surgery. There is a woman whose hand was almost amputated, but has been operated upon. You must have seen the old man in that emergency ward and how badly he was burnt. Then the boy with the bullet in his head may need an operation to remove it,” he said.
“The biggest challenge we have is money, because most of the experts are coming from outside.” He said.
In response, Ashiru said he had already made a financial commitment to assist the victims, but did not disclose the amount.
Fielding questions from journalist after, Ashiru said, “what I saw today is just barbaric and unacceptable. Even animals cannot just descend on each other like this. This madness has been going on for too long and it just has to stop. We must find ways and means to get a solution,” he said.
Speaking further, he said, “This is a product of bad governance. Political leaders must talk responsibly and not incite the people against each other.
“As you know, security and safety of our people is top on the agenda of the PDP when voted to remove the APC in the state.
Asked on the relationship between his running mate, Sunday Katung and Gen. Zamani Lekwot (rtd), he said: “Those peddling the rumour that my running mate is a son of Gen. Zamani Lekwot are my desperate political rivals who have lost creativity and are now resorting to laughable pranks to gain cheap popularity.
“Hon. Katung is a Bajju man, from Madakiya village, in Bajju Chiefdom, while Zamani Lekwtot is an Atyap man from Jankassa village, Atyap Chiefdom. They don’t even speak the same tribe. Hon. Katung was raised by his uncle, Gen. Yunana Nom, who is a retired general and successful business man. Gen. Nom is into ginger processing. They are deliberately mixing up the whole thing out of mischief,” he said.
Others on the entourage include, Ambassador Sule Bello, Director General, Kaduna State 2019 PDP Campaign Organisation, and his deputy, comrade Danjuma Bello Sarki among others.
