PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE LEADERSHIP OF THE AREWA YOUTH FOR PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT (AYPAD) ON THE CURFEW IMPOSED ON ZANGON KATAF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KADUNA STATE
The leadership of our organization after carefully studying the 24-hour curfew imposed on Zangon Kataf Local Government of Kaduna State by the state government, since 17th of January, 2017, which is over two weeks now. We call on the governor of Kaduna State Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai to review the security situation in that area and relax it, since the area is now peaceful and calm.
The curfew which was imposed in other to curb the security situation in the area has achieved its aim, for it is obvious that normalcy has returned to the affected area.
Our visits and interactions with the security agencies, traditional rulers and the good people of the area has shown that allowing the curfew to persist at this time is not helpful to the people of Zangon Kataf Local Government and the state in general. All economic activities have been shut down, innocent children who are suppose to be in school are at home because their schools are under lock and key. Markets, where people go to engage in commercial activities for their live hood are closed, health care services are skeletal and at their lowest ebb, all the banks and other financial institutions are also affected. Life is becoming bearable for the people.
Imposing 24-hour curfew for so many days in any area that is not a war zone is not only unhealthy but can be calamitous and counter-productive, hence, the need for it to be relaxed to allow the people go about their normal activities and fend for themselves.
We strongly believe that, the renewed effort and vigilance of the security agencies in the area if sustained, the security challenges bedeviling Southern Kaduna would be a thing of the past.
We therefore, commiserate with the good people of Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State and Nigeria at large who lost their love ones and hard earned properties in the several attacks in Southern Kaduna.
For the progress and development of our nation, we call on the people to eschew violence and continue to leave in peace with one another. We enjoin all and sundry to continue to pray to God Almighty to restore lasting peace in Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State, Northern Nigeria and the Nation in general.
